There is a $3,700 request to have a horse drawn buggy on the Friday before Wassail weekend.
That's a lot of money that can be best used elsewhere. First, Friday is a workday, and it's far less than ideal to have truck traffic waiting behind horse-drawn carriages.
Second, last Wassail coincided with the emergence of Omicron, and it rained all day, two factors that drove attendance down. The horse and carriages may have worked then, but it was an unusual year. We can expect turnout to return to normal this year, which will actually be a more accurate test.
Third, the EDC said it would engage the community of Wassail and other events before making them bigger. That conversation hasn't occurred. Funding this grant would break a promise the EDC has made to the community.
